The Kubasonics are arguably Newfoundland’s finest Ukrainian band. Their trademark sound combines top-flight musicianship spiced with quirky humour, a dizzying array of exotic traditional instruments, and an eclectic high-energy stage show.
The Western Canadian leg of their tour marks a homecoming of sorts. Former Winnipegger Brian Cherwick started this project in Edmonton and they developed a large following on the Prairies. Since regrouping in Newfoundland with a revamped line-up, the band has reached a new level of success. In 2017 alone they were winners of three MusicNL Awards (Group of the Year, Folk/Roots Artist of the Year, Entertainer of the Year), voted “Best Band to See Live” and their CD “Kubfunland” was short listed for the 2017 Borealis Music Award.
The Kubasonics 2018 Canadian Tour combines appearances at a number of festivals, including the Mariposa Folk Festival and Stanfest, with club and theatre shows. It builds on their 2017 Tour that included performances in the Caribbean and Eastern Europe, including in Ukraine where they shared the stage with artists such as Ruslana, Tartak, Antytila, Komu Vnyz, Burdon and Lemko Bluegrass Band.
